Let it Go!

Believe it or not, I am an organizer. Except for my clothes closet— but that’s another story. This time of year is a great time to fulfill that New Year’s Resolution of de-cluttering. While you’re binge watching Stranger Things, clean out the kitchen drawer that drives you crazy when it catches on that oversize pen you got at Stucky’s on your vacation in 2009.

Now I do not claim to be an expert and my children have accused me of being a hoarder; but as they say, it is the journey and not the destination, the little things do add up.

At any given time I have 3 boxes going in the garage. One for donation, one for auction or yard sale and one for procrastination. Like I said I’m no expert. If you're cleaning out clutter, my rule is to touch it and make a decision. Often my procrastination box is the largest, but I find in a week or so it gets taped up and heads to the Re-Use It Shop. Except for that giant pen which always ends up back it the drawer.

Over time our tastes and styles change, it’s just the curse of being human. The problem happens when we can’t let go of that resin lion’s head that hung above our soaking tub. It goes in the basement because, 1. I paid too much, 2. I got a good deal on it, 3. It was Aunt Fanny's. The clutter in your house and mind is not good for you. It’s stressful. YOUR HOME SHOULD NOT MAKE YOU STRESSED. There are several sayings related to the resale business: "There are no pockets in a burial shroud, There is no luggage rack on a hearse, and my favorite, everyone’s stuff ends up in a cardboard box on the front lawn."

So all that stuff in the basement, tucked into closets and crammed into drawers? As they say in a Disney movie…. Let it Go!
